Kevin Beggs has been a member of the IRFU National Panel Referees for eight years. Originally from Christchurch, New Zealand he came to Ireland in 1995 and took up the whistle as a member of the Leinster Rugby Referees, where he also served on the Executive Committee for five years.

Kevin is a member of Ashbourne Rugby Club in Meath, and regularly touch judges in Europe. He is also a Television Match Official (TMO). He was a member of the team of six officials that officiated at the Amlin Challenge Cup final in 2010, alongside Alain Rolland, Alan Lewis, George Clancy, Alan Rogan and Tony Redmond. His match jersey is proudly displayed in Ashbourne Rugby Club. We speak to Kevin about his involvement in refereeing at both a domestic and national level and also find out what it is like to ‘run the line’ and ‘TMO’ at the top level.

Leinster Referees appointed to November tests

Leinster’s Alain Rolland and Dudley Philips will be involved in the upcoming International Rugby November tests. Rolland will referee the Italy v New Zealand clash on November 17th in Rome. He will also ‘run the line’ on November 10th when Italy take on Tonga, and November 24th when Samoa visit Paris.

Dudley Philips will be assistant referee for the Wales v Argentina game on November 10th in Cardiff and the France v Samoa game on November 24th in Paris.

We also extend our congratulations to Munster referee John Lacey on his appointment to his first full international France v Samoa at the Stade de France on Saturday, November 24.


Affiliate Referee Workshop

An affiliate (formerly associate) referee workshop will be run by the IRFU in the following locations:

Lansdowne FC on Wednesday October 17th at 1900.
Ashbourne RFC on Thursday October 25th at 1930.

If you have any members of your club interested in refereeing within your club they should attend. No registration is required.

Heineken Cup and Amlin Challenge Cup Referees Rounds 1 and 2

The ERC Match Officials Committee has named the referees for Rounds 1 and 2 of the Heineken Cup.

Pascal Gauzere of France will be in charge when reigning champions Leinster Rugby get their title defence under way with a home game in Pool 5 against tournament newcomers, Exeter Chiefs, at the RDS on Saturday, 13 October.

The Round 1 clash of last season’s Amlin Challenge Cup winners, Biarritz Olympique, and Aviva Premiership champions, Harlequins, at the Twickenham Stoop will be refereed by Ireland’s George Clancy, while Greg Garner of England takes charge of Racing Metro 92 v Munster Rugby at the Stade de France.

Mathieu Raynal of France will referee his first Heineken Cup fixture when Glasgow Warriors host the 2012 beaten finalists, Ulster Rugby, at Scotstoun Stadium in Round 2, and Nigel Owens will be on duty for the Saracens-Racing Metro 92 game in Pool 1 at King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels on Saturday, 20 October.

Neil Hennessy of Wales will have the honour of refereeing the first game in the 2012/13 European club season when he takes charge of the Amlin Challenge Cup tie between Mont-de-Marsan and Gloucester Rugby at Stade Guy Boniface on Thursday, 11 October.

Ian Tempest (England), Leo Colgan (Ireland), Giuseppe Vivarini (Italy) and Ian Davies (Wales) will all be refereeing their first European matches in Round 1 of the Amlin Challenge Cup.
