It is with deep shock and sadness that we learnt of the passing of our refereeing colleague and friend Paul Cusack last night. Paul was the life and soul of our refereeing family. He always had a joke, a wise quip or a friendly word for everyone. He was warm and funny and an all round great guy. His passing has left an empty feeling and a lot of sadness amongst his refereeing colleagues this morning. He will be sadly missed. Ar dheis de go raibh anam.
The President, Jim Breen, wishes to extend his sympathies to Paul’s family on behalf of the association.
Reposing at his home from Saturday afternoon. Removal from his home on Monday morning to St. Colmcille’s Church, Knocklyon, arriving at 10.50am for 11am Mass. Funeral immediately afterwards to Glasnevin Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations, if desired, to Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross.
Leinster Rugby Referees are delighted to announce that Helen O’Reilly has been appointed to referee Ireland Women XV v Spain next January.
Helen will follow in the footsteps of Aoife McCarthy and will become the Leinster Rugby’s Referees second female international official. She will of course be following in the footsteps of our other international referees who have served the Leinster Rugby Referees with pride over the last 100 plus years. Leinster Referees in Europe.
Heineken Cup Officiating.
The arrival of the Heineken and Amlin Challenge Cups see Leinster Rugby Referees dispersed all over Europe. In the last program, for the Munster match, we spoke a little with Kevin Beggs about his roles as a TMO and Touch Judge in Europe (available on our website www.arlb.ie). Kevin is off in France this week touch judging in Bordeaux. Lucky boy. We generally see our referees being sent to games in the Heineken Cup or Amlin Cup as teams of three or more. This means that an Irish referee will typically have two touch judges from Ireland with him and most likely the TMO will also be Irish. This is obviously important in terms of getting communication on the field right but also helps in putting a referee at ease when he is working with colleagues familiar to him.
Leinster Rugby Referees only have one man in the middle this weekend, as Dudley Philips from St Mary’s College RFC referees Bordeaux-Begles v London Irish. Kevin is out assisting him. Ireland however has five referees in action with three coming from Munster and one from Ulster, so a large contingent of Irish referees are on the road this weekend. We wish them luck. Dudley also refereed in the French Top 14 competition last weekend in a game between Mont de Marsan and Stade Francais. Dudley is quickly becoming one of the top referees in Europe and we wish him well. Continue reading Leinster Rugby Program – Article 4→
