It has been a year for referees much as any other year – a year of highs and lows where the best they can hope for is no complaints from players on the field and no complaints from watchers off the field. A tough ask?
Referee abuse remains a universal problem for referees. Glen Jackson, once a great player and now a great referee, said that there was a difference between playing and refereeing, for you could make five mistakes as a player and then get cheered for doing something well. In refereeing you are jeered for doing something perceived to be wrong and after that nothing that you do can rehabilitate you in the eyes of the beholders.
Much of the abuse is a repeat of what commentators have to say, regardless of whether what they say is wrong. The result of poor regard for referees is dwindling numbers universally even though referees are now trained and compensated as never before in the history of the game. What they achieve with the complicated, frequently changing laws is amazing.

We are saddened to report the passing of Anne McInerney. Anne will be well known to many of you from her long service in the Leinster Branch. Anne was administrator of the Leinster Schools Competitions and was always there to lend a helping hand and ear to referees involved in these games over the years. Last minute phone calls with good wishes, changes of venues or times were not uncommon, as were the words ‘Don’t come back to me with a draw’. Anne retired from the Leinster Branch in May 2014 after over 15 years service. She was also mother-in-law to Dudley Philips. We offer our sympathies to all the McInerney family at this time.

Happy New Year. It is great to get Christmas over and done with for another year and get back into some refereeing. Last year was a hugely successful year for the Leinster Rugby Referees. We’re half way through our 2014/15 season and already a number of new referees have passed their trials, embarked on a new refereeing career and we are about to deliver our second new recruits course of the season. Our organization is continually growing learning and improving and we look forward to 2015, and delivering more top quality referees and assessors to Leinster and the world. We had one of our most successful recruitment years in 2014 and hope to see these guys and girls move through the ranks over the coming years.
The 2014 year started off with Helen O’Reilly getting appointed to the Womens Six Nations. The year got better for Helen as she was then appointed to the World Cup where she went on to referee the semi final. The year ended with the great news that Helen was promoted to the IRFU National Referees Panel with immediate effect. What a year the girl has had and we are immensely prod of her. Her promotion was based solely on merit but she has to be congratulated on becoming the first female referee to achieve this status.
