The IRFU has highlighted and issued reminders on this on a number of occasions. However, in recent weeks, we received a small number of queries about the ongoing World Rugby eyewear/goggle trial.

Tag Rugby World Cup

The International Tag Rugby World Cup is kicking off this week. Leinster Rugby Referees have a few members there. Good luck to Garreth Crawford who is playing with the Mens Over 30’s team and to Ultan Ryan and Martin Kavanagh who are officiating at the tournament.

Referees Announced For 2016 RBS 6 Nations

World Rugby has announced the match official appointments for the 2016 RBS 6 Nations Championship, which gets underway in February.

The appointments were made by the World Rugby Match Official Selection Committee at its recent meeting in London and follow a detailed review of all performances during the recent Rugby World Cup.

We have seen in recent weeks how hard a job refereeing is, especially at the top level. I was recently reading Alain Rollands book – The Whistle Blower – which gives a great insight into how refereeing has changed over the last number of years. Even if you look at the role of the TMO, in the early days there we 4 or 5 cameras at a ground, now there are 20 or 30. This is something that makes the job of the referee much more difficult.

Given that referees in all sports are verbally and physically abused, why would you take up refereeing? The truth is abuse in rugby is extremely rare and our referees are still held in the highest regard by players and supporters of the game. Obviously it is easy to have a pop at a referee rather than a player. Sure we make mistakes, but doesn’t everyone on the field?

European Weekend – Who’s in action

Leinster Rugby Referees only have one man in the middle this weekend, as Gary Conway from New Ross is in Castres who welcome Newport Gwent Dragon. Nigel Correll is in Agen assisting Peter Fitzgibbon and Paul Haycock is in Newcastle with Andy Brace. Dudley Phillips is in Wasps with John Lacey in the Champions Cup.

September and October sees the start of the area meetings across Leinster. The province is broken into five areas for refereeing – North East, North Midlands, Midlands, South East and Metropolitan. Each area has an elected representative who manages the referees and new members in his given area. Each month the areas have their own meetings amongst their members. This month saw the focus remain on the key refereeing points for the season which, for those interested are on our website. Rather than re-hash previous presentations the meetings were more of an open discussion on these aspects. The meetings were facilitated by David O’Brien of the IRFU.
