A great turnout of 70 plus referees attended the General Members meeting in St Mary’s College RFC last night (06/03/2011). We were delighted to welcome Chris Pollock (NZRFU) to the meeting. Chris was in Dublin to referee the Ireland v Scotland 6 Nations game. Peter Fitzgibbon, International Referee and IRFU Leisure Rugby Office was also in attendance. Peter gave an overview of the forthcoming Volkswagen tag rugby and IRFU touch rugby tournaments being held this summer and encouraged referees to sign up. Those interested can sign up here. It is a great way to keep fit in a social environment over the summer.
Peter then did a presentation on foul play for the referees and assessors. This session included some audience interaction as attendees were called upon to be both the referee and the AR in a number of scenes shown on the screen. The session was a real eye opener to some and after much debate a general consensus was met on all six clips shown.
Chris Pollock then answered a number of questions put to him by Dan Wallace and the audience. Chris spoke of what got him into refereeing and that he believes that good management skills are one of the skills every referee needs. He spoke about his preparation for this weekends 6 Nations game, his first time refereeing in the tournament, and how he will try to visualize scenarios going into Saturdays game. He talked about his favourite refereeing moments with the UBL clash between Shannon and Garryowen in Thomond last Saturday being up there with them. He is also looking forward to running out on the Aviva pitch having already attended a game there. He was asked a few questions from the floor including how he sees the Northern Hemisphere game differing from the Southern Hemisphere one.
Dan presented Chris with a Leinster Rugby Referees tie and jersey and thanked him for taking time out to come to the meeting.
