Le jour de gloire est arrive ! – the words of the French national anthem. It would be hard not to start and mention Irelands victory in Paris. What a weekend and what a thoroughly deserved victory. Well done to the team and management. It has been a great six nation’s championship and we were lucky enough to have a lot of involvement from Leinster Rugby Referees. Alain Rolland and Dudley Philips represented us in the men’s championship and Helen O’Reilly represented us in the ladies competition. It is of course sad to see Alain bow out, he has been a great ambassador for the Leinster Rugby Referees for a long time now. We wish him well.

One of the highlights for me was the Ireland versus Italy game in the Aviva. It was great to see a large crowd staying back after the game to witness a superb display from the ladies side. What was more pleasing from a Leinster Rugby Referees side was that three of our lady referees were involved on the day. Helen O’Reilly and Susan Carty both ran touch for the game. Susan is a member of St Mary’s College and the IRB Women’s Development Officer. Aoife McCarthy, another international referee, was the fourth official and Gary Glennon was blessed amongst women as 5th official. It is a great achievement for us to have so many ladies involved in refereeing and we hope this number grows over the next few years.

A message from the President

Helen O’Reilly appointed to Womens Rugby World Cup 2104

As President of the ARLB I was delighted to hear of the appointment of Helen O’Reilly to the Referee Panel for the forthcoming Womens Rugby World Cup finals in France in August 2014. This is a wonderful achievement for Helen and just reward for all her hard work and dedication. We will all be watching her progress and hoping that she achieves the ultimate reward.

We should all share in Helen’s achievement. Her progress to this level whilst indicative of her ambition, dedication and commitment is also acknowledgement of the quality of work undertaken by our Rugby Committee, in particular, and all members involved in referee selection, assessment, mentoring and coaching.

Well done Helen.

On behalf of all members I wish you every success at the Finals.

Helen O’Reilly to referee at Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014

With just over four months to go, the world’s elite female match officials have been announced for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014 .

The IRB meet with the selectors in Berlin and made the appointments.

They have decided to take 14 Match Officials, of which 8 are referees and 6 are assistant referees.

Ireland’s Helen O’Reilly has been selected as one of the final 8 referees to officiate at the tournament.

The tournament, which takes place in Paris from August 1 to 17, will feature the world’s top 12 teams competing in three pools.

Champions New Zealand will be out to defend the title they won in England four years ago and whilst the players are working hard in the gym and on the training grounds, so too are the match officials.

Helen has also been appointed to referee two test matches this July, England V USA on the 2nd July and again on the 6th July.

Dudley Phillips to referee at Tbilisi Cup

In June the IRB’s Nations Cup will again be played in Bucharest and the Tbilisi Cup will be played in Georgia. For both of these cups the IRB has appointed teams of referees.
